Karen Thornber

Professor of Comparative Literature and of East Asian Languages and Civilizations

Karen Thornber is Professor of Comparative Literature and of East Asian Languages and Civilizations at Harvard University, where she is also Director of Graduate Studies both for Comparative Literature and for Regional Studies East Asia.  Author of two multiple international award-winning scholarly books–Empire of Texts in Motion: Chinese, Korean, and Taiwanese Transculturations of Japanese Literature (Harvard 2009) and Ecoambiguity: Environmental Crises and East Asian Literatures (Michigan 2012)–Thornber has additionally published more than sixty articles and chapters on diaspora, gender, postcolonialism, trauma, and the environmental and medical humanities, as well as a prize-winning Japanese poetry translation.  Current projects include a book on literature and climate change.
