Steven Hartman

Steven Hartman (Ph.D., M.F.A., B.A.) is Guest Professor of English at Mälardalen University and convenor of the Humanities for the Environment Circumpolar Observatory. With backgrounds in literary history, cultural reception studies, ecocriticism, film studies and creative writing, Hartman has focused much of his energy over the past decade working to advance interdisciplinary environmental humanities. His current work focuses on mapping environmental consciousness and environmental memory in literature; integrating the humanities in global change research and policy; and building collaborations among artists, researchers, educators and civil society to help mobilize public action on climate change. Together with Dr. Astrid Ogilvie of the Stefansson Arctic Institute, Hartman co-leads the international transdisciplinary research project Reflections of Change: The Natural World in Literary and Historical Sources from Iceland ca. AD 800 to 1800 (2017-2020) funded by The Swedish Foundation for Humanities and Social Sciences. He also leads Bifrost, an educational and research engagement project that addresses the societal challenges of climate change through public events and multimedia dissemination of knowledge foregrounding the work of researchers, educators, artists, front-line activists and various partners from civil society. Hartman’s other projects have been supported by the Swedish Research Council, The Swedish Foundation for Strategic Environmental Research, the Swedish Research Council for Sustainable Development, NordForsk, Wenner-Gren Foundations and the U.S. Fulbright Program. For a decade he has led the Nordic Network for Interdisciplinary Environmental Studies (NIES), which he helped co-found in 2007. He also serves on the executive boards of the Seed Box Environmental Humanities Collaboratory at Linköping University and the Human Ecodynamics Research Center at the CUNY Graduate Center, City University of New York.
