Masumi Kai received her PhD in Language and Culture from Osaka University of Foreign Studies (currently Osaka University). Dr Kai specializes in Applied linguistics and Japanese language education. Her research fields are language acquisition & language maintenance, discourse analysis, and colonial education. She has taught in Taiwan and Okayama University, Japan. She was a scholarship researcher at the University of California, Santa Barbara and Harvard University, sponsored by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. She is currently an Associate Professor at the University of Guam and is a coordinator of the Japanese Studies track.
