Melanie Murcott is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Public Law at the University of Pretoria, where she teaches Environmental Law and Administrative Law. She is reading towards her doctorate titled ‘Towards a Legal Theory of Transformative Environmental Constitutionalism’. She completed her LLM in Environmental Law in 2013. Her LLM thesis, ‘The Role of Environmental Justice in Socio-Economic Rights Litigation’, was published in South Africa’s premier law journal, South African Law Journal. Melanie contributed to UNEP’s 2017 publication ‘New Frontiers in Environmental Constitutionalism’. Melanie serves on the executive committee of the Environmental Law Association of South Africa, and is a member of the IUCN Academy of Environmental Law.
Research focus areas: administrative justice, environmental law, environmental justice, environmental constitutionalism, social justice, socio-economic rights.
