Plants in Tzaishan

Home to more than 700 species across 1,100 hectares, Tzaishan is one of Kaohsiung’s richest ecological landscapes. Threatened by overdevelopment and increasing tourism, this project raises environmental awareness by documenting and photographing the mountain’s diverse plants and wildlife to help preserve its fragile biodiversity.

With an area of more than 1100 hectares, Tzaishan has more than 700 species of flora and fauna. However, this rich and delicate ecosystem is threatened by overexploitation, improper development, and the swarming of tourists and hikers. This project seeks to arouse the ecological consciousness in order to preserve regional bio-diversity through photographing and documenting the plants and animals in Tzaishan.

From Sea to Sky is a Spring 2026 hybrid panel series that uses archipelagic thinking to place island and desert studies in dialogue, examining how seemingly discrete landscapes are bound by shared histories, ecologies, and imaginaries.

Project

Create the Change

Create the Change (CTC), supported by a President’s Special Initiative grant, addresses the moral, cultural, political, and economic complexities that hinder progress toward planetary health—challenges that cannot be solved by technology alone. The program mobilizes the social sciences and humanities in partnership with sustainability sciences to confront issues such as disinformation, social and environmental injustice, power imbalances, and cultural barriers.
